“An Active Student Needs an Active Teacher”

Class Observation day 3. Today we got to see another English class, which was way different from the very serious class that we attended in 9th grade. At 9:40, we attended a class handled by another English teacher, Pak Darso. He discussed about Simple Present Tense. He started the class by showing flashcards of Bahasa words then asked the whole class to translate them to English and vice versa. Then he discussed Simple Present tense and elaborated on the uses of simple present tense, the structure and examples. He then proceeded to give the students a seatwork as a form of Formative Assessment. During this time, the students were allowed to confer with their friends as to how the test should be answered. Then after the assessment they discussed the answers as a whole class where some students volunteer to show their answers on the board. After sometime, they answered another assessment individually.

This is somehow the typical English class but what makes the most difference is how Pak Darso delivers the lesson. He is a very active teacher and is very passionate in motivating the students to learn English. He encourages them to always share their ideas and participate actively in class. His ability to engage his student is something that inspires me to do the same to my students. “An active person is a successful person.” according to him. So when his students hesitate to participate, he immediately reminds them of this.

During this day, he said something that I would want to apply all throughout this experience. He said, “A successful person is not afraid to make mistakes. As long as you try, you are already on your way to success.
